Suicide and Suicide Prevention

A Resource for Prevention

Suicide is a complex issue. It touches a lot of people, yet it can be very difficult to talk about. Still, it’s important to talk about suicide because it’s part of the treatment and prevention of it. On this page, you’ll find a resource for understanding suicidal thoughts, recognizing the warning signs, and finding ways to prevent them in a safe and compassionate environment. Our goal is to have a conversation about suicide prevention to help empower individuals, communities, and healthcare providers to take meaningful action.

What are suicidal thoughts?

Suicide thoughts, or suicidal ideation, refer to thoughts about, considering, or planning suicide. These thoughts can range from fleeting, for example, “I wish I was dead” or even detailed planning, like a step-by-step approach. It is important to recognize that having suicidal thoughts does not make a person weak or flawed; more often than not, they are symptoms of conditions that require appropriate treatment with the help of a mental health professional.

What to Watch For: Suicide Warning Signs

Knowing the warning signs for suicide can be critical to lessen suicide attempts and to increase the opportunity for effective intervention. Some of the warning signs may include:

  • Suicide-related statements or comments: talking about wanting to die or to kill oneself.
  • Feeling hopeless or having no reason to live.
  • Drastic mood changes—often out of character.
  • Withdrawal from friends, family, and activities that were previously enjoyable.
  • Changes in sleeping patterns—too much or too little.
  • Dying or visiting people to bid them farewell.

Watching for warning signs can help you or your family members or someone you care about get the support needed before a crisis happens.

Understanding the Mental Health Connection to Suicide

Suicide thoughts are often a result of feelings that one cannot cope with life-and-death situations that may be:

  • Mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and more. Suicide-related thoughts are most closely associated with mental health conditions, especially depression and alcohol use conditions.
  • Major life events: such as loss of a family member, financial difficulties, or large life changes.
  • Trauma or abuse, including physical, emotional, or sexual abuse.
  • Substance abuse can reinforce feelings of depression and alienation. Beyond disorders, a number of mental health disorders contribute to suicidal ideation and lead to a greater appreciation for complexity and diversification of these disorders.

Suicide Prevention and Support Strategies

Acute Care

If you or someone you know is in danger, seek emergency care immediately. Having a crisis plan that includes emergency contacts and a list of safe, supportive people to call can be life-saving. It’s important to know that immediate risk confidential support is available through crisis lifelines, such as the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, which provides 24/7 access to trained crisis counselors to those in need or experiencing a crisis. An important piece of a comprehensive prevention strategy involves not only the identification of risk factors but the recognition that a previous suicide attempt is an important predictor of suicide.

Professional Counseling

Empowered by the depth of knowledge of mental health issues, therapy provided by our therapists – who include health care providers and trained crisis counselors – can offer the support, treatment options and therapy needed to get out of suicidal patterns. Our therapists use an array of therapeutic approaches customized to the individual needs: CBT, DBT, and others.

Medication Management

Sometimes, medications can be prescribed in order to help manage the symptoms that are contributing to suicidal thought or suicidal behavior., such as severe depression or anxiety.

Building a Support Network

Connection with others is important. Encouraging participation in community events, support groups, or other social events for families can lessen isolation and loneliness. It is the coordination and cooperation of several sectors, such as public health, education, and media that have made suicide prevention efforts an area of focus.

Health Care

This involves mental health insurance and physical health care integration, the avenue through which comprehensive care for mental illness is ensured to affect the other end of the person’s body and mind.

Education and Awareness

Education and awareness of the signs and symptoms of depression and other mental illnesses and health issues will lead to earlier intervention and prevention. Sanctuary offers workshops additional resources and other resources to empower you and your loved ones to recognize and act on signs.

Self-Care Practices

Regular physical activity, healthy diet, adequate sleep, and mindfulness practices can help a lot with improving overall mental health and resilience, which is one of the most essential things in the battle against suicidal thoughts.
